A Metra Union Pacific North (UP-N) commuter train collided with a semi-truck in Wilmette, Illinois, on Thursday afternoon, causing injuries and bringing rail service across the north suburban corridor to a halt.
According to officials, the crash occurred near the Green Bay Road and Linden Avenue crossing when UP-N train #337 struck a semi-truck carrying equipment on or near the tracks. The impact prompted an immediate emergency response, with police, fire crews, and Metra personnel rushing to the scene to secure the area and assist passengers.
Emergency responders confirmed that at least two people aboard the train were injured and transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. Fortunately, authorities stated that no fatalities have been reported in connection with the crash.
The collision led to a complete suspension of UP-N service in both directions through the affected area, with trains halted while crews worked to clear debris and inspect the tracks for damage. Commuters were advised to seek alternate transportation as delays extended across the line, one of the busiest commuter rail routes in the Chicago region.
Early reports indicate the train was operating on its scheduled route when it encountered the truck at or near the crossing. Investigators are now working to determine how the vehicle ended up in the path of the train, including whether crossing signals, timing, or driver error played a role.
Rail officials emphasized that the situation remains under active investigation, and restoration of full service will depend on safety inspections and clearance of the crash site.
The incident has renewed concerns about rail crossing safety in densely populated suburban corridors where commuter trains and roadway traffic frequently intersect.
